CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAMME: COMMUNICATION SKILLS 🫂
CAPACITY BUILDING PROGRAMME: COMMUNICATION SKILLS 🫂
Communication is the cornerstone of effective teaching, and mastering it requires understanding both its fundamental principles and the various factors influencing it. Recently, our group of seven members had the privilege of conducting a capacity-building programme for our classmates, focused on honing communication skills. Here’s a detailed look at how we structured our session and the valuable insights gained.
The session began with an engaging introduction to communication skills, emphasizing their importance in educational settings. We outlined the main processes involved in communication, including encoding, transmission, and decoding, which set the stage for a deeper exploration of the factors affecting communication.
To make the learning experience interactive and memorable, we used a series of activities to demonstrate five critical factors affecting communication:
1. Choice of Communication Channels
- Activity: Telephone Game
We started with the telephone game to illustrate how the choice of communication channels can impact message transmission. Participants passed a message through a chain, which transformed by the end, highlighting how different channels can alter the clarity and accuracy of the message.
2. Length of Communication
- Activity: Storytelling Chain Game
Next, we used the storytelling chain game to showcase the effect of message length. Each participant added a sentence to a story, demonstrating how extended communication can lead to details being lost or altered as the message is passed along.
3. Noise
- Activity: Whisper Game
The whisper game served to illustrate the concept of noise in communication. By whispering a message through a line of people, we highlighted how external noise and distractions can distort the intended message, underscoring the need for clear and focused communication.
4. Individual Perceptions
- Activity: Picture Interpretation Game
In the picture interpretation game, participants interpreted the same image differently, demonstrating how individual perceptions can influence understanding and interpretation of messages. This activity stressed the importance of considering the receiver’s perspective in communication.
5. Clarity of Message
- Activity: Non-verbal Communication through Dance
We concluded with a non-verbal communication exercise where participants passed dance steps from one person to the next. This activity vividly illustrated how the clarity of a message can be compromised when non-verbal cues are unclear or misinterpreted.
The programme concluded with a comprehensive review of the activities. We discussed the lessons learned and how each factor affects communication in real-life scenarios.
This capacity-building programme was a valuable experience for both the facilitators and participants. It not only enhanced our understanding of communication skills but also equipped us with practical strategies to address various communication challenges. As future educators, mastering these skills is crucial for creating an effective and engaging learning environment. Through interactive activities and thoughtful reflection, we’re better prepared to communicate with clarity and empathy in our professional journeys.
